ALDI is a surprisingly great place to shop for low-carb groceries. One of the perks of buying low-carb and keto at ALDI is that it’s likely to be much more affordable than buying similar items at box stores or online retailers.

Comparing a low-carb nutrition bar from ALDI to an almost identical one at my local grocery store, I saved over $4! With comparable ingredients, taste, and nutrition values, it makes sense to save and buy your favorite low-carb foods at ALDI.

In this post, I’ll be sharing my top picks for the best ALDI low-carb options (keto-friendly) for people with diabetes so you can manage your blood sugars while sticking to your budget.

How to find low carb options at ALDI

Shopping for a low carb meal plan doesn’t have to be stressful! You just need to know how to read a Nutrition Facts label so you can find the best choice for your health goals. Here are a few things to look for to determine whether or not a particular food is the right choice for you.

First, take a look at the carbohydrate count. For this list, I’ve chosen foods with 15 grams of net carbohydrate or less, but you can include items with more or less depending on your needs.

You still want to prioritize slow-digested carbohydrates rich in fiber to promote more sustained energy and slow the absorption of glucose in the bloodstream. Opt for whole grains, plant based proteins, non-starchy veggies and limit added sugars.

Choose foods that have a good amount of fiber and protein to keep you full and satisfied without raising your blood sugar.

Avoid foods that are high in saturated fat, sodium and calories just because they are low carb. Managing your blood pressure and heart health are still important, so always check the label and watch your total daily intake of these nutrients.

Finally, remember that low carb or no carb is not the main way to manage diabetes. Focus more on how low carb foods can easily be worked into a diabetes meal plan by pairing them with a source of protein, fat or fiber to avoid blood sugar spikes.

Breakfast

Whole & Simple Breakfast Bites Turkey Sausage and Spinach

Breakfast bites turkey sausage

Net carbs: 4 grams

Don’t feel like cooking eggs in the morning? Keep your freezer stocked with these whole and simple breakfast bites for a convenient, low carb breakfast. They’re high enough in protein to keep you feeling full, and low enough in carbs that you can enjoy them with a slice of low carb bread and not have to worry about your blood sugar spiking.

Simply Nature Organic Seedtastic Bread

Organic Seedtastic ThinSliced Bread

Net Carbs: 9 grams

The old standby breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast can still be a healthy way to start the day on a low carb diet. Every slice of this Seedtastic bread has 3 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and is only 70 calories. So while it’s low carb, it also has the stats to help keep you full and satisfied.

Even though it’s made with 12 whole grains, thin-sliced still means thin sliced. It makes for great toast, but don’t expect it to hold together a hearty sandwich. If you’re in need of a sturdier option try one of these low carb breads from ALDI.

Low Fat Cottage Cheese

Net carbs: 5 grams

When compared to yogurt and cow’s milk, cottage cheese is generally lower in overall carbohydrates while providing more protein, meaning it will have less impact on blood sugar levels. Just scoop it and enjoy it alone or pair it with a side of fresh fruit, add it into smoothies, baked goods, chia pudding, or even homemade ice cream.

One-half cup of cottage cheese provides 11 grams of protein along with a good source of calcium and the perfect breakfast base. However, cottage cheese tends to be high in sodium so look for lower sodium options or try Greek yogurt instead.
